Pre-Season Boat Checklist

Beat the Breakdown Blues.

Boats don’t always fare well when left sitting idle, and with the rough winter we’ve just had, many have been parked up for longer than usual — but now that spring has arrived, it’s the perfect time to get prepared with a few simple checks before heading out on the water.

Engines & Outboards

  • Inspect and charge batteries (or replace if weak)

  • Check fuel lines, primer bulbs, and fittings for leaks or cracks

  • Inspect propeller for damage, dings, or fishing line

  • Top up engine oil and gearbox oil; replace filters if due

  • Flush cooling system and check water pump impeller

  • Test run outboard before launch

  • Book Service - for inboard and outboards, if you haven’t had your annual service yet.

Electrical & Electronics

  • Test all onboard electronics (navigation, sounder, VHF, lights)

  • Check fuses, switches, and wiring for corrosion or loose connections

  • Inspect navigation and anchor lights for operation

  • Test bilge pumps and float switches

  • Check Anchor Windlass and winches

Safety Gear

  • Inspect and re-arm lifejackets / PFDs

  • Check expiry dates on flares, EPIRBs, fire extinguishers

  • Test horn, sound signals, and VHF radio

  • Review and restock first aid kit

Hull & Deck

  • Inspect hull for damage, cracks, or osmosis blisters

  • Clean and polish topsides, check antifoul condition

  • Inspect anodes and replace if worn

  • Check through-hull fittings, seacocks, and strainers

  • Test steering and control cables for smooth operation

Plumbing & Onboard Systems

  • Flush freshwater system, check for leaks

  • Test toilets, grey water, and holding tanks

  • Fresh and salt water washdown. These tend to seize up without use.

  • Inspect gas lines and appliances for leaks (if fitted) and check gas alarm is functioning.

General

  • Lubricate hinges, latches, and moving parts

  • Stock up on spare fuel filters, fuses, bulbs, and oil

  • Review trailer (if applicable): tyres, brakes, bearings, lights
